Apple Music Launches Initiative To Monetise DJ Mixes

The streaming platform has partnered with Boiler Room, DJ-Kicks and more for the new venture

Apple Music has launched a new initiative to host DJ mixes, and compensate rights holders behind the music on them.

The streaming platform has developed a tool that builds on Shazam technology to "allow Apple Music to properly identify and compensate all of the individual creators involved in making a particular DJ Mix – including any artists behind the music in the mix," explains a press release. As a result, the company is now placing a greater focus on mixes, teaming up with the likes of Ben UFO and Charlotte de Witte in the coming months to launch a series of mixes or produce one-off sets with full tracklists.

Apple Music has so far partnered with Boiler Room, Tomorrowland, Mixmag and Cercle, among other dance music platforms, to bring their mixes to the streaming platform. !K7’s long-running DJ-Kicks mix compilation series is also coming to Apple Music, with most of the mixes from the series, going back to its launch in the ’90s, being made available again for streaming.

"This is a big moment for K7!," says the label’s founder Horst Weidenmueller. "Through the partnership with Apple we finally have a place to celebrate DJ-Kicks with [an] additional 14 editions which haven’t been in the market for over 15 years."

You can find out more about the initiative, and browse the current offering of mixes, here.

The rollout of the initiative follows on from an initial partnership between Apple Music and Boiler Room, which was announced in September 2020.
