Barbican have announced that Aphex Twin is set to perform the UK premiere of his Remote Orchestra idea, at the Barbican Hall on 10th October. As its name suggest, it finds the long-running electronic musician and composer directing the actions of the orchestra – in this case The Heritage Orchestra and Choir, a 28 piece string section and 12 strong choir – by remote control. The concert in London is also set to include James’ take on Steve Reich’s ‘Pendulum Music’, entitled Interactive Tuned Feedback Pendulum Array.
He first used the technique at the European Culture Congress in Wroclaw, Poland, last year, which we attended, where he was both performing a response to Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki’s Threnody For The Victims of Hiroshima and debuting the remote orchestra. "James conducts the orchestra plus singers using a visual score," we said in our review of the event, "providing onscreen instructions to the performers that enable him to remix the players themselves live; it’s a clever and visually involving bridge between the real and digital worlds each separately inhabit."
