Aphex Twin Unveils New Augmented Reality App

YXBoZXh0d2lu, a free app, accompanies his recent four-track EP

Aphex Twin has released a new augmented reality app, named YXBoZXh0d2lu, which translates to ‘aphextwin’ when decrypted using Base64 binary-to-text encoding.

Created by Japan-based spatial internet studio KALKUL, the free app features work by Aphex Twin and his longtime visual collaborator Weridcore, as well as additional material from his long-standing record label home, Warp Records. The app is said to offer an "alternate world" of interactive immersion, combining artwork with Aphex Twin videos and music in a 3-D experience.

Among the material featured within the app is a collection of AR landscapes, which are soundtracked by Aphex Twin’s latest release, Blackbox Life Recorder 21f / In A Room7 F760, which came out last month. Users of the app can access its immersive qualities by pointing a phone camera at the packaging of his latest release, whether its the front cover or inner sleeves of the CD and vinyl editions.
