Subculture Speaks to Andrew Weatherall @ Sub-Sonic Live from De Facto on Vimeo
A few months back, we had the pleasure of chatting with Mr Andrew Weatherall – the best-dressed gentleman in the disco – just before he took over the Garage in London for a night with Fred Perry Sub-Sonic Live. Despite the fact that he was suffering somewhat from a surfeit of distilled spirits at the closing of his Love From Outer Space disco. The ever-genial Weatherall talked about dancing stemming from "the need to transcend yourself… whether it’s at a disco or in church", the trouble with MP3s, fighting for records in the days when only a few copies necessary imports would arrive in record shops, turning up at a rockabilly night with cosmic disco records, discussing the pros and cons of yurt living with Paul Simonon from The Clash at Port Eliot. Then there’s the double-edged sword that is the democratisation of everything, and his attire that night, which Weatherall describes as a "workwear thing, Edwardian road mender with a hint of Augustus John" being mistaken for "the ghost of George V" and the trouble with vintage culture: "I just like the aesthetic… I’m not campaigning for the return of rickets". What’s more! Discourse on Englishness and the joy of the heroic failure. Andrew Weatherall will be DJing at the Quietus’ Yeti Lane and Damo Suzuki gig at the Shacklewell Arms tomorrow night, Thursday June 21st 2012. You can buy tickets here.
