Writer, DJ, performer and promoter Amy Lamé has been appointed by London Mayor Sadiq Khan as the city’s first ever Night Czar.
The appointment was announced today at a press conference in London, where Sadiq Khan described the role as "the toughest gig in City Hall". Lamé’s challenges will involve ensuring that London ensures its status as a 24-hour city with the night tube being rolled out across the city at a time when a number of London’s clubs and venues are facing closure for a variety of reasons.
At the press conference, Lamè detailed one of her first initiatives as Night Czar, in the form of a series of monthly Night Surgeries, at which she will speak with businesses, nighttime workers and members of the public in order to build policies going forward for London’s nighttime economy. "For too long, the capital’s night-time industry has been under pressure," she said. "Music venues and nightclubs are closing at an alarming rate."
Lamè has been championed for her involvement in the city’s LGBT nightlife community and was a vocal campaigner in helping to save gay venue the Royal Vauxhall Tavern.
