A new compilation commissioned by National Geographic and Alaska’s Anchorage Museum sees a number of musicians rework and remix sounds recorded from the earth by a team of scientists.
Stations is the tenth compilation in the Field Works series, from Brooklyn label Temporary Residence Ltd.. Producer Stuart Hyatt worked with a team of scientists from the EarthScope experiment to record the sounds, using ground recording devices, which were then manipulated and processed.
From there, a number of musicians and vocalists – including Hanna Benn, Janie Cowan, Masayoshi Fujita and Laraaji – were invited to rework the sounds in their own vision. Alva Noto, Penelope Trappes, Afrodeutsche, Nathan Fake and Sophia Loizou, among others, were also invited to add their own remixes to the project, which will come with a book called Stations Listening To The Deep Earth. Check out ‘Station 5’ from the release, as well as Nathan Fake’s remix of the piece, above.
Temporary Resistance Ltd. will release Stations on April 1, 2022.
