A Certain Ratio Detail New Album, ‘1982’

The lead track 'Waiting On A Train' includes vocals from Manchester MC Chunky

A Certain Ratio have shared details of a new studio album, called 1982.

Set for release in March, the 10-track album is said to take in experiments with Afrobeat, jazz and electronic music. It was recorded by the core lineup of Jez Kerr, Martin Moscrop and Donald Johnson, together with Tony Quigley, Matthew Steele and Ellen Beth Abdi, and follows on from the release of a 2021 trilogy of EPs and 2020’s return album ACR Loco.

Ahead of the album’s release, the band have shared lead track ‘Waiting On A Train’, which you can watch a video for above. According to press materials, the track began life as a lo-fi hip hop jam in the studio, before they invited in vocalists Ellen Beth Abdi and MC Chunky to add their contributions to the cut. "It worked really well, there’s great chemistry between them," the band’s Martin Moscrop said of the vocal match-up in a statement. "It’s got the right amount of pop, the right amount of surrealism, the right amount of moodiness. It just works."

Mute will release 1982 on March 31, 2023.
