Nonesuch Records has announced plans to press David Byrne’s 2004 album Grown Backwards to vinyl for the first time.
The album was Byrne’s first for the label and was his last solo LP until the release last year of American Utopia, also through Nonesuch.
The new vinyl edition will take in the full album as well as six bonus tracks, including a collaboration Byrne did with Caetano Veloso called ‘Dreamworld’. The tracks will be pressed across a 2xLP edition for the release.
"He worked from the ‘top down’, humming melodies into a micro-cassette recorder and later unscrambling them to create songs – a significant change from his usual practice of starting with improvised textures and grooves and later adding tunes," explains Nonesuch.
Speaking about one of the bonus tracks, Byrne says: "’Ausencia’ is my version of an arrangement of this beautiful Cape Verdean song that was originally done by the Bosnian composer Goran Bregović for Cesária Évora. The title means ‘absence’, and the lyrics are in Portuguese and Creole."
