13. Cocteau TwinsTreasure
I discovered Treasure through a mutual record collector friend. I was around 19, and he was like, ‘Oh, you’ve never listened to the Cocteau Twins?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, they’re a goth band.’ It’s so much more than that. And then he showed me the whole situation. I love Elizabeth Fraser, I think she’s so amazing. I feel like she gave me confidence to not have to always make sense, because a lot of their lyrics are nonsense, but it doesn’t take away from the emotional quality of the song. It just kind of cues more into your subconscious. So, yeah, I felt a kindred spirit with her in that way. I just think those records are so perfectly, uniquely spooky and feminine.
It soundtracks me moving a lot, living out of my car and being a struggling musician. I still admire it just as much, and it still inspires me to try to be more unique and distinctly my own thing. ‘Ivo’ is a gorgeous opener of a track, and ‘Amelia’ is the saddest, most radiant song of all time. They’re both extra sad.
