8. ActressR.I.P
I appreciate that Actress is a bit of a nomad; I hope he won’t mind me saying. He is not really connected to anything. He does his thing. He works with repetition in such an intricate way. As someone who wasn’t brought up with techno music and didn’t really understand it when I first heard it, Actress was a revelation. I was thinking, ‘If this is what you call techno, then techno is my thing.’ I could put his records on repeat for a whole day. R.I.P was musically my favourite. Standouts for me are ‘Jardin’ & ‘N.E.W’ but overall the texture of the record is so organic, all the tracks seem to have a life of their own. He is an inspiration to my work, even if you can’t hear it directly.
tQ: You can definitely hear parallels in your work, from different angles.
Consistent, he is very stylistically consistent, but still exciting. We are quite different. The template of my music is wider. Artists like Actress and Burial are very consistent in their work. When Burial did the ‘happy record’ ‘Rival Dealer’ and then showed his face accompanied by that statement I remember being really annoyed!. It was years later I was able to accept and enjoy that record. I’m sure there are people frustrated by my output as I continue to explore new territories and I understand this now. My records are a gradual opening & letting into my personal life.
