Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

10. Christine And The QueensChaleur Humaine

This comes from the wormhole of 80s music and pop music too. For me Christine & The Queens is your perfect pop. I saw her perform on the Jools Holland Show. She was dancing and fully owning it. I just felt the song was perfect. If I am going to listen to some pop that album is one I turn to. It doesn’t feel over-produced, it doesn’t feel like too many other people are involved. She knows what she is doing and firmly in control. In pop, it seems many artists become a product of other’s ambitions. I didn’t feel that when I was watching her on Jools Holland. This is your Laurie Anderson, this is what I want. I am not against pop music at all. In the underground, I have found, the same processes are going on. I used to be a purist and think the underground was completely different from the pop world; it’s really not. I don’t need to be anti-pop.

When I wrote ‘I’m Fine’ Katy Perry had released ‘Dark Horse’ and people were saying it sounded like my work. I was horrified! I didn’t want anything to do with it. Fans thought it was amazing. As long as I am not compromising myself I am open to all sorts nowadays.
