Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

3. Yo La TengoI Can Hear The Heart Beating As One

I could have picked almost anything by Yo La Tengo, they’re the kind of band that always makes you feel at home. I’ve always loved them and consumed their records, no matter what mood I’m in, they are calm and comfortable. They played so much; I saw them in the States and in London, and they played ATP. They’re just wonderful, the fact they have a woman on drums was always very inspiring to me. It was one of the favourite bands of Tom from Tomaga. We had a little calculation before he passed away last August, that we must have done something ridiculous like 45,000 miles in his car – hundreds of shows – we would do distances like driving from London to Southern Italy and back. We did Prague, Vienna – everywhere with the car. This record was always played at some point – it was one of the records we shared. We wouldn’t talk, just listen to it, absorbing whatever was going on outside the windows.
