Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

8. Are You In Love?

I’ve worked with [Basia Bulat] for the past three records. We wrote ‘Bless This Mess’ and ‘Futures Bet’ on this record. Basia and I met in a café in 2013. I was a barista, and she was just a customer. We didn’t tell each other we made music. We just started chatting about things and really liked each other. Someone else told each of us that we both made music later. She is the living embodiment of music. And I love this song ‘No Control’ because it sounds heavy. It sounds what it feels like to be out of control, or wishing you could have control but you’re just banging your head against the wall. Like, I think she really nails that desperation, that yearning all humans have when they wish they could have control.
