Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

4. Anything Can’t Happen

I’ve been a fan of Dorothea Paas for a while, and had seen her many times, so I was hearing all the songs in arrangements she played live. I was familiar with almost all the songs on the record, but then also my Max mixed this record, so I was privy early on to hearing a lot of the tunes. At the end, my reward was getting to hear it. It’s flawless. I think it’s really going to go down as a classic. I think people are going to be finding this record, for as long as there’s records.

She also plays In Marker Starling now. There was a song that Chris asked me to sing on the new record, and I agreed to it, but I realized I wasn’t the right singer for the song. I’m not right for my voice. I suggested Dorothea. She did it, and they hit it off. I’m proud of hooking them up because it’s such a good match, these two unbelievable singers.
