Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

11. Lush Life

Alanna Stuart, the singer of Bonjay, sings on ‘Pump’ on the new record. ‘Ingenue’ was on Bonjay’s last record, and I fucking love this song. This is a radio hit. It should be certified platinum. Her vocals are just so wild on it. There’s a really intense synth solo, which I think Thom Gill is doing. I find the emotion of the song very intense, and it’s another song that sounds a little bit scary. I love Alanna’s dynamics in her voice, how she can be very soft and then she just puts the pedal to the metal.

There’s a video on YouTube, of U.S. Girls performing at the Polaris Prize awards [in 2018], doing ‘Pearly Gates’ a cappella. Geordie Gordon, Dorothea Paas, Cass Richards, Basia Bulat, Lavender Bruisers and Alanna Stuart are all in it as a choir. The amount of vocal talent in one video is amazing.
