Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

Kritty [Uranowski] is my vocal teacher. I was looking to take vocal lessons somewhere, and she came recommended by a friend. We were like instant sisters. We’re born two days apart. We’re both Cancers. We cry a lot. She taught me how to sing, basically. She didn’t want to change my voice. It was more, ‘how do we preserve your voice but make it so that you don’t lose your voice? How can you have breath control?’ We have collaborated ever since.

She helps me with arranging on record, and then she helps me with figuring out how to sing it live. She was a massive part of Heavy Light, because that was all recorded live and I had to sing it live. I worked with it for months beforehand, singing each song, practicing it, finding my breath, marking my breath, all of that stuff. I’m in that process with her now for this next record. She’s my teacher and the person I go to for voice support, as well as the emotional support of putting myself out there through song.
