Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

13. CanEge Bamyasi

I kind of defaulted to Ege Bamyesi out of all their records, because I listened to that one the most, but can we just talk about Can generally? Again, a band who are just about the idea of permutation, and how expansive you can make something you want to do, and ego-less, in a sense. They were rock stars, and when Damo Suzuki was fronting they had this person who was free-wheeling poetry over it, and it all hung together really well. And they had this power of taking a groove that’s pretty much the same groove over the course of those records, and just mapping so much stuff onto it – the groove and the funkiness of Can doesn’t get discussed enough. Those records are super-inspiring, and you listen to the band and they could have been a very flashy prog or glam band, but – and I feel this way about This Heat, too – I feel like I can hear all of those guys in the cement room, just working it out, and it sounds so visceral, like you can feel it on your skin.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Valentina Magaletti, Yann Tiersen
