Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

10. Aphex TwinRichard D. James Album

Daniel Kessler from Interpol, who’s a really good friend, an old friend, was the person who fully introduced me to electronic music. And he was the first person who asked me, “Have you ever heard Aphex Twin?” No, I hadn’t heard him. And it was definitely a sort of Nirvana moment, when I was just like, “What the fuck is that? Like, what is happening here?” I was like, this looks like a metal record, and what’s on it is aggressive enough to be that in a lot of cases, but it felt like the future, and like what music should be doing at that point, for me. He’s one of those people to me that’s a little like Brian Chippendale, where it’s just like, you make so much, and there’s so much that I know nobody has seen or heard, just this fountain of works. I’m super in-love with his music – I love Aphex so much.
