Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

4. Metallica…And Justice for All

Phil Manley: Ask most Metallica fans and they won’t cite this album as one that they like. Everyone claims Kill ‘Em All or Ride The Lightning as their faves. People complain about the sound of Justice. "The kick sounds like a snare" or "there’s no bass". Those are both valid arguments. My connection with this album is deeply nostalgic. It reminds me of a very specific time in high school. I would listen to this when I would mow lawns. With my Sony Mega Bass headphones buried deep in my earholes, this was the only thing I could hear above the sound of the lawnmower. Then the Black Album came out and I’ve never felt so betrayed.
