Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

2. Curtis MayfieldCurtis Live!

The way that Curtis could draw out a song was just great. And the musicianship that compliments it here is outstanding. It’s totally natural. His roots are in gospel and I love gospel. So the songs are built up gospel style but not with any preachiness. And his introductions are great as well. The version of ‘Mighty Mighty Spade & Whitey’ is simply magnificent.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Chris Corsano, Tony Njoku
