Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

7. PJ Harvey4-Track Demos

I would like to put the Four Track Demos as my favourite. I was actually really into Dry, and went to that concert, loved it. But then to be honest, Rid Of Me, which was the second album, and this is only my opinion, I thought it was too rock for me. I wanted it to be more distilled. I just thought she had such an energy by herself that she didn’t need all of that. That’s why when the Four Track Demos came out, with ‘Rid of Me’ and ‘Reeling’ and all those, I just loved how it was just a drum machine keeping time and her voice and guitar just so intensely front. I think that inspired me to use the drum machine and guitar. It’s so funny because I always thought PJ Harvey was going to go more electronic, and it was only my idea in my head. When she did Is This Desire, that was a bit more electronic, but it never fully happened. Also To Bring You My Love! What an incredible album. That was her stepping into herself as a drag artist, which is pretty incredible in the way of not really feeling like this female energy, but wanting to express it, seeing it more as drag.
