Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

3. Laurie AndersonBig Science

I remember going to a record shop when I was 15 and just seeing this album cover of this woman with glasses and it just looked so freaky. She had a man’s suit on at the time when it was so binary. I took it home and it was just so different and so cool. I like the song where she’s talking about being a captain [‘From The Air’]. “This is your captain speaking. We are all going down”. And also, the video was so inspiring too, with the use of the face and the imagery and things you’d never seen before. Yeah, it was very, very art, and that was what was such a big deal about it, that she was so art and wasn’t playing into any gender. It wasn’t about her gender at all, which was really cool.
