Rage Against The Machine – Rage Against The Machine
How does their blend of funk, metal, hip hop and political agitation stand up today? Really fucking badly I’d say. It’s one of those records that’s completely of the time. I guess I was really interested in their political stance at the time, or at least it felt that way because I was 14 and I was doing the angry teenager thing. So whether you researched what they were saying deeply or not, or whether you believed it or not, it was really a chance to shout, ‘Fuck you’ as a teenager. I listen to all of these records still to this day apart from this one and Pantera. At the time it was great that Tom Morello could make his guitar sound like turntables, and you have to remember that context because now it sounds stupid. I mean, people don’t even want to scratch on real turntables these days, so they definitely don’t want to do it on guitar. But at the time he was super, super innovative, and no one has ever really played guitar like him. So, for better or worse, he deserves respect for that.
