R. Kelly – 12 Play

Badman. He’s another Michael Jackson of his generation – plagued with controversy as well. [laughs] R Kelly is responsible for a lot of even contemporary R&B, now – he’s like Teddy Riley in a sense, Ted Riley birthed a lot of things as well, he birthed new jack swing. But Changing Faces, R Kelly produced their first album, [and] Aaliyah. A lot of people. For me, R Kelly’s first album, if you’re from the era of the 90s and you put that album on, it speaks for itself: ‘Bump n’ Grind’, ’12 Play’, ‘Sex Me’ – all those tunes are just the epitome of then, and they’re still classics now. And when you hear all the 90s stuff, you can hear R Kelly produced a lot of it. If it wasn’t Teddy Riley or Mr. Dalvin, then it was R. Kelly. If you don’t even know those tunes, you’d know them without even realising it, or hear them sampled in other tunes.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Lord Spikeheart, Tom Ravenscroft
