Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

6. Weyes BloodFront Row Seat To Earth

This record had a huge effect on me melodically and emotionally, too. Obviously, the themes of Front Row Seat to Earth helped inform my record Ignorance. The songs on this record gave a voice to a certain type of despair I was feeling. It was there for me during moments when I felt unaccompanied in those thoughts. I appreciated that record emotionally because of what it gave me and how it inspired me to do a not dissimilar thing.

Weyes Blood pulled climate change into her music in a very gentle way. The songs are simultaneously personal and planetary. It’s because people think I’m doing that with my music now, but she did it first. Maybe she was more subtle about it.
