Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

10. The ImpressionsKeep On Pushing

I love melody and I really love melodies with heart. I love vocal performances, too. This is young Curtis Mayflield writing songs for The Impressions when he joined the band. I feel such a synchronicity with the way he writes melodies; it just makes so much sense to me. They’re so full of heart and beauty. This is a record I always return to when I need to get in touch with feelings of joy or love. I get so much warmth from this album when I listen to it. Keep on Pushing has certainly influenced my sense of melody and been a guiding force in my melodic choices. As well as Mayfield’s other contributions to The Impressions and his solo work, too. I’m a big fan of Curtis Mayfield’s melodies.
