Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

2. Jackson BrowneRunning On Empty

When people ask me what it’s like being on the road I always say listen to this album. You don’t need to ask anything, you just play this album and you’re on the road. It’s just wonderful, and my favourite track off it is ‘Rosie’, because everybody thinks it’s about a groupie and it’s not. And that’s all I’m going to say! They did recording on the bus. You can hear the engine, on ‘Nothing But Time’, you can hear it, and it’s great. It’s a great way to do an album, to actually make it on the road, you know. And all the parts of the road: some stuff was done backstage, in the dressing room, so you really are getting the entire experience. That song ‘The Load Out’ says it all. It’s just brilliant. It was one of the albums that years ago, whenever we had guests over at the house, that album went on.
