Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

10. Bonnie “Prince” BillyMaster And Everyone

Will Oldham wrote to me after the release of my 2007 album Sonata Mix Dwarf Cosmos because he really liked it. It was an amazing letter to receive directly from him and it was a very heartfelt response to my music. I had actually been listening a lot to this album around that time too because one of the producers of my debut who introduced me to it.

He invited me to do support for him in 2008… So the first time we met was when he played here in Oslo. It was also the first time I heard him cover one of my songs which was a total surprise! I was up in a gallery of a big theatre in Oslo and I nearly fell down from it! It was such a surreal experience to hear him cover ‘Day’. Then recently he released a cover of the whole album which is totally wild!

From touring with him, I’ve heard so many concerts and there’s never been a bad performance. Every night is different, with a different setlist every time. Will is such a present performer, whether it’s in his own music or in the music that he covers. He’s just so dynamic in his work and in the way he plays and sings. It’s highly inspiring to me. I’ve tried out so many new things just because of him.

I’ve previously covered ‘Joy And Jubilee’ off this album. Of course, I love all the songs from it… It just came to be that it was that song I wanted to do… I’m not entirely sure why.
