Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

13. Slugabedany attempt to control the environment or the self by means that are either untested or untestable, such as charms or spells

I knew about Slugabed as a dubstep producer, this really wonky, jazzy, odd music. I hadn’t heard anything from him for a really long time and then just stumbled across this. I was really blown away by how different it was, and it really seemed like what he was doing was really unconstrained, honest, direct and pure. It sounds like he’s having loads of fun with it, it felt like I was hearing him musically being his authentic self. That album is amazingly detailed, funny, clever. I hear some real genius there. Comparisons are always really lumpy, but it’s like Aphex Twin if he was into jazz funk. I don’t know how well known his music is, but it feels to me like this stuff should be absolutely massive, it’s really catchy, but super weird as well. I’m a huge fan and just totally gush over his music.
