2. Tangerine DreamRubycon
Talking of prejudice… Working on the soundtrack for Les Salauds led me to Tangering Dream’s Thief soundtrack and also Friedkin’s Sorcerer (a nod to Popol Vuh’s Aguirre – I love that synths in the jungle thing). Even though I was kind of doing research in a way, stepping into this unsure and new way of making music (the main character was alien and unsure on the streets of Paris) these guys got under my skin. I can’t believe that I’ve spent all these years listening to their contemporaries and having unfounded preconceptions and prejudices against them. Rubycon is one of my most played pieces of vinyl over the last five years. It has taught me so much about long form, non-composed writing that really helped me grasp the scope of what I was reaching for with Music For A Year In Small Paintings. It was recorded at Virgin’s The Manor studio like so many great albums form that period. Including my next choice…
