Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

4. Alice ColtraneJourney In Satchidananda

I’ve been listening to this every day right now, trying to remind myself of my true passion, of why I do this. I went to New York for Fashion Week – Fashion Week is so pretentious. For me, it had me thinking, oh, Jesus. I don’t want to do this. Why am I here? But while I was out there, I took a kamāncheh class. I really like Sufi music, spiritual, traditional music. It really resonates with my soul. It really inspires me and I just love it. It reminds me of when I was a little girl in church, playing violin for the choir. I feel like that is my root.

Subconsciously, Alice Coltrane is an influence in that way, but it’s just like, her mindset is an influence. She had a spiritual awakening and was inspired by Indian music, using that to uplift her. I feel like I do that with all spiritual music. I feel like my music has that touch as well. No matter how electronic or pop it gets, the root of it has this very spiritual feeling.
