Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

1. Francis BebeyAfrican Electronic Music 1975-1982

Discovering Francis Bebey was a really, really huge deal for me, because it supported my whole fascination with traditional string instruments. He’s a musicologist who wrote a book on African string music called African Music: A People’s Art. It was like, oh, he’s a musician, but also he’s really into traditional string instruments like me. His music’s great, but I really like him as a person. It fueled that inner nerd. I want to have my own instrument shop one day.
