Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

7.

Geoff Barrow and Ben Salisbury – Annihilation

I thought this film was absolutely brilliant, the end scenes in particular. Also, it’s one where I think the soundtrack by the end becomes a brilliant feature of the film. Ben Salisbury is using some sort of modular synth, I don’t know which one he’s using but that real visceral electronic sound I thought was brilliant and worked perfectly with that film. And obviously Ben and Geoff had done Ex Machina with Alex Garland and I was really impressed by that as well. I think Annihilation is an incredibly well-made film, beautifully styled. I think probably a lot of the mixed reviews came from the fact that it premiered on Netflix and was a streamed movie. There’s still a little bit of snobbishness about feature films that go straight to streaming.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Lord Spikeheart, Tom Ravenscroft
