Berry Lipman Orchestra – Star Maidens

This goes back to about four or five years ago. We were stuck in the studio in Cornwall and Benge had somehow managed to find a box-set of this 70s sci-fi series called Star Maidens. I’d never heard of it before that. It’s absolutely brilliant and also very ‘correct’. It was co-produced in Germany and in Britain, half of it filmed in Britain and half in Germany, so it has this wonky kind of feel to it. It’s set on a planet where women run the planet and men are the slaves. We’ve got this nice juxtaposition of misogyny and gender difference and gender power. It was a 70s film that flagged up the inequalities of gender power. And the soundtrack and the costumes, and everything about it are really brilliant. I highly recommend people watch it.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Lord Spikeheart, Tom Ravenscroft
