Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

Jerry Goldsmith – Logan’s Run

I put this in as a nod of the head to my fellow musician Benge, because Logan’s Run is his favourite film. When we did the soundtrack to The Tourist, Benge was going, “But can we do Logan’s Run?” And I’m like, “No Benge, it’s called ‘The Unfilmables’, the concept is about films that were never able to be made." And he’s still going [excitedly] “But can we do Logan’s Run?” So I told him he could approximate what he would do for Logan’s Run. Also, I chose it because it’s an acknowledgement of the fact that Jerry Goldsmith had just got an ARP Odyssey and most of the soundtrack is done on that particular synth, which again is one of Benge’s favourite synths. So it’s an acknowledgement to my mates in the band. And so is the next one as well.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Lord Spikeheart, Tom Ravenscroft
