Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

9. PJ HarveyUh Huh

I find a lot of her albums too clean for me to enjoy, but this one was really the one that has been with me for a long time that I listen to often, even now. I listen to it very regularly. I liked ‘Pocket Knife’ a lot. I’ve got this almost secret interest and fascination with old bluegrass, folk, Irish folk, sailor songs, murder ballads, the whole shebang. [laughs] And country. But it’s like my secret. It’s more about what we’re talking about. I love ‘Jolene’. I love Johnny Cash.

I listened to this album for a lot of years, singing along, just getting ready for college or washing the dishes. ‘Cat On The Wall’ is the ultimate cooking and washing dishes song. For me, I guess it’s cathartic to sing. I just like the way she sings; it’s expressive, feels free, and yeah, it feels a little unhinged, but I enjoy that. It’s my mood album, for when I’m in a weird mood. I’ll listen to it and it doesn’t necessarily make me happy, but it kind of vindicates my mood and energizes me.
