Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

8. Tourist Trap

This is a low budget slasher movie but it’s completely unlike any other slasher movie you’ve ever seen. And also it features lots of mannequins which are inherently creepy. You can put a mannequin in a brightly lit room and it still looks creepy. So you’ve got all these mannequins that are almost coming to life and this guy who lives in a waxwork museum and then these kids turn up because their car has broken down. It’s a typical thing but then it goes batshit nuts. And I don’t know how true it is but apparently they blew most of the budget on getting Pino to do the score. Pino did the music for lots of Italian genre movies, he did a lot of De Palma’s and a lot of horror movies. I love this score because it’s just so odd. It’s got all these vocal pieces, where it’s female singers having their voices run through tons of chorus [effect]. All the tracks are very short, so it’s an odd soundtrack to listen to. It’s an odd soundtrack but then it’s an odd film. So they suit each other.
