2. Forbidden World
This is an old Roger Corman film from the 80s, which was originally called Mutant, and basically it’s an Alien rip-off but made for about 50p. I spoke to the director and he said, “Yeah, I wrote that film in two days and we shot it in thirty.” Because that’s what [producer, Roger] Corman used to do. He would pre-sell it to all these different territories. The artwork is amazing. It’s this giant monster hovering over this half naked girl and you think, “Fuck! I need to see this film.” When you actually see the monster it’s just like a rubber blob with some teeth. It’s outrageous. The alien penetrates a woman with one of its tentacles and a geyser of blood comes out of her back, and you’re like, “Oh wow, I can’t believe you went there…” But the score’s great. Susan Justin was in a new wave band – she was dating the director and he said do you want to do the score. I like my electronic scores. I played a track from this when I last DJed and it wasn’t when I was doing a soundtrack set. I had three people coming up to me to ask who it was because it sounds really contemporary. It sounds like it could be some hipster band from Dalston but better than that sounds. She uses electronics, she doesn’t sing but she murmurs words and manipulates them with echo. It’s a full band but it’s electronic. She owns a cassette of the master. I own a copy of it. We’re going to put this out and master it from the vinyl, which isn’t ideal but we’ve got the guys at Optimum helping out.
