10. Zola JesusOkovi
She’s great! I love this record. Okovi was the first record I heard by her and I know that she’s been around for quite a bit longer. And again, I don’t know how I got to hear her, but that record was released after Slowdive reformed and we were back out doing gigs and becoming much more aware again of newer music, maybe more than I was before.
I love her voice. I love her songwriting. I admire the way she operates her way of being. She has a Patreon and she’s done that for a number of years now without a label, and she self funds everything. She’s a very astute woman and very interesting. Her voice is another one that’s just off the scale –it’s ridiculously good. ‘I Love Her Voice!’: this is just my stock answer and I’m gonna have t-shirt printed with that on!
She’s a great character – she’s quite primal as well. I’ve not seen her live but I’ve watched live footage of her online and she really belts it. She’s fucking brilliant and talented with their piano playing. She’s not afraid to put herself out there, but she does everything on her own terms.
