Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

6. Depeche Mode‘Enjoy The Silence (Timo Maas Extended Remix)’

So for years and years now one of our regulars, Simon, would come up at the end and say ‘It was really good, but it’d be a lot better if you played Depeche Mode. It really would be a lot better if you played Depeche Mode….’ which became a running joke between us.  But when we did it we really did it with this version by Timo Maas. I remember we’d been at Trouw in Amsterdam the night before and we’d been up all night. Well, if not all night, then we’d had about three hours sleep. We arrived at the Prince of Wales and it was a daytime job in the pissing rain, in true British summertime fashion. But we had this little dressing room that had its own little rooftop area and the builders had left this fucking toilet there. Well, just the porcelain part anyway. So while Andrew was in the dressing room I thought, here’s an opportunity for a turn. So I just dropped my trousers and sat on the toilet and pretended to be reading the paper. Then Andrew had come outside and nearly fucking ended himself from laughing. Some moments don’t need words.
