Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

3. Teengirl Fantasy‘Cheaters (John Talabot’s Classic Vocal Refix)’

Casting my mind back, there are so many to choose from of course but the ones that really spring to mind that I really associate with our first venue, The Drop, are things like ‘Cheaters’. I guess the readers of The Quietus are probably not so familiar with this kind of thing but it’s absolutely evocative of the early days for us. It was one of Andrew’s discoveries, I just couldn’t fucking believe it when he played it that first time. I don’t know who the sample is but the ‘Cheaters never win’ refrain is definitely a sample. [It’s actually Love Committee’s 1977 track ‘Cheaters Never Win on Gold Mind Records]. I can’t listen to this one too much, it just makes me think of Andrew and it makes me upset. But I can wheel it out occasionally if the time is right.
