Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

Yeah Max B, Max B… I mean he’s locked up now innit and he probably did do it, but to me, Max B is THE greatest New York rapper of all time. He can’t sing for shit, but he sings all his own hooks. A terrible singer. Absolutely awful. But he’s fantastic. I’m obsessed with Max B. He invented wavy too. Did you know that? That’s where it comes from. Anyone who uses the term "wavy", you’ve got Max B to thank…

This is probably the second or third tape I got of his and I remember listening to this over one really messy weekend in Liverpool, I must’ve done everyone’s head in and played it repeatedly. On the second track, ‘Stake Sause’, there’s a synth sound that I’ve been trying to find the VST for or make it indirectly for almost five years! I’m not really a VST technician but I can’t make that.

I used to bang this tape repeatedly. There’s tracks on it that sample ‘Englishman In New York’ but it’s still good. So… y’know? Like I say, he can’t sing for shit but he does really, really hilarious adlibs. I’m a borderline Max B obsessive.
