Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

13.

That was the first film I ever saw at the cinema with my dad at the same cinema, at the ABC in Gloucester. It’s just one of those great Arabian Night style of adventures and another Harryhausen film. It feels very right for re-imagining in the CG-era because all those films were about coming up against these phantasmagorical creatures, but you can’t really ever replace that wonder of the sort of Harryhausen one-eyed troglodyte coming out of the ground: the way they walked fascinated me! You knew they weren’t really there with the actors but somehow it integrated well and there was a brilliant enjoyment of the artistry of it I loved as a kid. I don’t think I cared, I just remember thinking “ah it’s there!” and loving every moment.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Lord Spikeheart, Tom Ravenscroft
