Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

13. Al GreenLivin’ For You

It’s full of great love songs, it’s a touchy feely record and people have that awful thing where they say ‘oh I was conceived to this record’ but it is very sexy. I was going out with Daniella who I’d mentioned before. She had blond hair one week, turquoise the next, part of the Bowie thing. She’d always be listening to Al Green, such a beautiful band and what a great singer. You could put on any of his records and we all love it at home. It’s soul music, which is important. I saw him live once, he was dressed in military gear, and there’s nothing quite like it, you’re watching this bloke work and sing, and you see how he does it, moving away from the microphone, it was the first time I’d really seen a singer’s singer with perfect control and it made such an impression on me. I am a romantic sort of person, because without love, what have you got? You’ve got bugger all.
