11. Tarika BlueTarika Blue

I was very fortunate to get the original vinyl of this when I went on a trip to Japan and got it for quite cheap, which is insane. It was really good quality! This album is just fucking sick.
I think I heard ‘Dream Flower’ in a listening bar and went, wait a minute – this is the one that Erykah Badu samples… oh fuck, I’ve not properly delved into this album. The album is, I feel, a very underappreciated album that people of course know about, but in a weird way. Kind of like, oh yes, I listened to the Tarika Blue album, but not really deep into the instrumentation or the joy or the soul. I listen to this album all the time and notice new bits.
The purpose of not listening to dance or electronic music whilst making [With A Vengeance] was to not have anything that would inform or stop me from being able to make something original. Listening to music where people are jamming or using proper instruments to make music meant that I was informed, musically, a lot better. This really helped with that – so beautiful, so peaceful. Great to cook to, great to mellow out to if you’re in a production loop and you can’t get out of it.
It also reminds me of a really lovely time before the album was put together, when there were only a few songs scattered around in demo form – and being really excited about making the album, because there was a plethora of music to listen to that felt expansive and thought-provoking.
