Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

9. DJ RashadDouble Cup

No one can take away the legacy of someone so amazing. I had already been into footwork while he was still alive, but it was unfortunate that the timing around being in the same spaces and going to things whilst he was doing his thing didn’t match up in time. A friend of mine, Shannen SP, used to work for Hyperdub and told me about the aftermath [of DJ Rashad’s death] whilst she was there. She was giving me lots of information about him and I really enjoyed our conversations when we were in uni together.

I feel like this album is one of the most forward thinking, career defining albums of our century, because he shows what footwork can be for the future. No one has really made an album like this since, I don’t think we’re ever going to get an album like it again. What a joy, what a pleasure for this to be the first release on Hyperdub. Knowing Steve [Goodman, aka Kode9, Hyperdub founder], I completely understand how he got that album in the first place, because Hyperdub as a label is so forward thinking. Everything that Steve has done has turned to gold.

This album is just next to none, one of the best albums of all time. My memory around it is understanding how expansive footwork can be. It can be many different things that can easily lead into jungle or drum & bass, but can also have this acid techno element to it… this album definitely inspired my own debut album, for sure.
