Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

11. Robert WyattRock Bottom

I don’t know what can be said about this. I just thought I would be lying if I didn’t put it on here. It’s endured: I love it as much now as I did when I was young. It opens with the most beautiful, perfect song you could ever imagine [‘Sea Song’] then goes off into other places entirely. Being able to do both of those things within one album is amazing. It’s hard enough to do one thing well.

When I first heard Robert Wyatt’s voice, I remember thinking, oh, I can just sing with my normal voice, I don’t have to affect anything else. It’s like making the most of what you have, rather than trying to transform yourself into something you’re not. But maybe that’s just me trying to rationalise something that’s not actually as important as just how brilliant the music is, and how much it moved me.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Richard Norris, Weyes Blood, Gareth Jones, , Rachel Unthank, , Julia Holter
