Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

10. Skinny PuppyToo Dark Park

I love this sort of, I don’t know what you want to call it, industrial, hard-edged techno stuff. When we did the third album in America [1990’s Harmony Corruption], we were all fans of Skinny Puppy. A friend played us what must have been the Rabies album, and this came out a couple of years after. It’s just a trip for me how they pieced all these small, tiny sample parts together, it’s just such a dark album. I’d love to see Skinny Puppy, I never got the chance to see them. I love all Skinny Puppy, but this one in particular is just manic, it seems to me like it’s telling a tale. It’s unhinged, it’s dark, but there’s an excitement to it as well, it’s really fucking exciting.

There was one Napalm album, I think it might have been Fear, Emptiness, Despair, where there’s a mix that was never released in the end. We were trying to throw in some Skinny Puppy-esque sounding samples, but we never did it. Later on, we sort of toyed with the idea again, but yeah, anyone who knows me, knows that I love Skinny Puppy.
