Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

3. Jon BapWhat Now?

I was introduced to the album’s third track, ‘Born Into This’ by a friend. When I saw him by chance on stage in New York I didn’t even know it was the same guy I’d just been listening to. I remember thinking to myself, ‘That guy’s got something.’ You know? He was just totally immersed in the music. He was completely into it. It was the way he was reacting to what was happening around him. I listened to the album again after finding out who he was and really heard that total love of music. The detail of the songs and the compositions is of course incredible, but for me, the adoration for the music overwrites that complexity. What the combination of instruments do as a communal thing is particularly important to me.
