Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

11. Nai PalmNeedle Paw

Nai Palm is a good friend of mine. But that is not why she made it to the list. I went to watch her perform this record before it was released in an intimate setting, although not the whole record was played, just one or two songs. She was also doing covers that night and she wasn’t playing with her group, Haitus Kaiyote, it was just her, and I was completely mesmerised by her message and how she mixed nature with music. It was how the message came across and I respected that a lot. So I am happy the album was pretty.

She also worked with the indigenous people in Australia, and talks about describing the things they believed in.

I don’t want people to think I don’t chill. I’m chilled! Yeah, yeah. Very chill, you know. I mean, in our time, man, there is so many awful people doing so many awful stuff and our minds need different kinds of stimulation. And it is the same with music. You have to be able to listen to different music from the past as well as from the present, something that is holistic, something that will bless you, something that is calm. Our mind needs all of that. So it is good to have this kind of musical message.
